I finally got to hear from some of the amazing Gees Bend quilters at the Maiwa Textile Symposium on Granville Island a couple weeks back, on the heels of attending the first day of Occupy Vancouver in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Both collaborative physical efforts create connective power that comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable. Soon my studio mate and I were working out a collaborative effort of our own that could bring people together to busy the hands to free the mind.
Our Social Network is an actual free-form net of connecting strands of the fabric of our own culture, time and place. Anyone willing to tuck in for some knot-tying can get 'online' at our monthly open-studio days.
How our Social Network unfolds is as unpredictable as the sudden mobilizations of disparate populations. Not owning that knowledge is the first part of this open, collaborative process.
